Bleeding and receding gums are a sign of a serious oralproblem known as periodontal disease. It is one of the leading causes of tooth loss and not only affects the gums, but also the bone in the mouth, causing the teeth to loosen and fall out.
Gum disease generally starts as a mild inflammation of the gum tissue. When this happens, the gums may bleed while brushing or flossing. If timely treatment is not administered, then gum disease can progress to an advanced stage and cause permanent damage to the teeth and gums.
Periodontal disease is caused by the attack of bacteria on healthy tissue. Bacteria colonize and cause inflammation which leads togum recession and bone loss. Early treatment is the most effective way to control the progression of gum disease. The following forms of treatment can be utilized to treat different stages of gum problems:
- Scaling and root planing: This is a non-surgical treatment that involves a deep cleaning of the mouth followed by planing of the root surfaces. This flushes out all the harmful bacteria and helps get rid of infection. Once the gums have healed, the mouth retains its healthy state again.
- Gum Graft Surgery: Periodontal pockets created due to gum disease can expose the roots of the teeth. Gum grating is done to cover the roots using grafted oral tissue. The procedure is performed under the effect of local anesthesia.
- Dental Crown Lengthening: Periodontal disease can cause severe damage to the teeth. When the teeth break below the gum line, the procedure of dental crown lengthening can be used to prepare the area to receive a new restoration to fix the damaged tooth.
- Gum Surgery: Pocket reduction surgery is used to eliminate bacteria, control inflammation and eventually save the teeth damaged due to periodontal disease. It involves the gentle pulling away of the gums from the teeth to clean tartar and calculus and then suturing the gums back into their place.
